Following the release of S-Tone Inc.’s critically acclaimed debut album Love Unlimited in 1996Stefano Tirone made a decision that would become a defining characteristic of his artistic journey. Rather than consolidating an already distinctive musical identity, he chose to venture into entirely new territory, driven by an insatiable curiosity and a desire to keep exploring.

That decision gave birth to Cosmorama—not simply a pseudonym, but an alternative creative identity through which Tirone could pursue ideas free from expectations or stylistic constraints. More than a side project, Cosmorama became a laboratory for experimentation: a place where electronic music, jazz sensibility and cinematic imagination could coexist without boundaries.

Between 1996 and 1997, jungle and drum & bass were experiencing one of the most exciting periods in their evolution. What had emerged from the UK underground was rapidly becoming one of the most adventurous forms of contemporary electronic music, embracing influences from jazz, soul, dub, ambient and film music while constantly redefining its own vocabulary. For a musician with Tirone’s eclectic background, this fertile creative environment offered an irresistible opportunity to explore new rhythmic and harmonic possibilities.

Space Odyssey was conceived within that unique cultural moment. Rather than adopting the established language of British drum & bass, Tirone absorbed its restless spirit and reinterpreted it through his own musical perspective. Intricate breakbeats, deep basslines and constantly shifting rhythms are woven together with sophisticated harmonies, jazz-inflected arrangements, cinematic textures and the unmistakable funk-driven groove that had already become a hallmark of his productions.

The result is an album that naturally inhabits the space between the dancefloor and immersive listening. Although rooted in the rhythmic vocabulary of drum & bass, Space Odyssey consistently transcends stylistic boundaries. Soul, jazz, ambient electronics and broken grooves flow seamlessly throughout the record, each composition unfolding like a scene from an imaginary film where movement, atmosphere and emotion become inseparable.

Nearly three decades after its original release, Space Odyssey still sounds remarkably fresh. Many of its musical ideas anticipated the increasingly fluid approach to genre that would later define much of contemporary electronic music. Listening today, the album reveals the remarkable consistency of Stefano Tirone’s artistic vision: a producer and composer who has always placed exploration above convention, following instinct rather than fashion.

More than an alternative alias, Cosmorama represents the most adventurous and exploratory side of Tirone’s creative identity. Space Odyssey captures a rare moment in which artistic freedom, musical craftsmanship and fearless curiosity converged to create an album that has gracefully stood the test of time. It remains not only a fascinating document of a vibrant era in electronic music, but also a timeless reminder that genuine innovation is born from the courage to venture beyond familiar horizons.
