Jukka Eskola

 

Jukka Eskola is a jazz artist from Finland, he plays the trumpet.

Eskola, born in 1978, is currently regarded as one of the most talented instrumentalists of his generation following his steady rise to be one of the most sought-after figures in the Finnish jazz scene, especially thanks to his successful solo releases and his inspired work with The Five Corners Quintet.

Eskola’s latest project is “Jukka Eskola Orquesta Bossa”, which debuted on stage in November 2012. The concept sees Eskola travel sonically south to combine his subtle lyricism with the tradition of bossa nova. The new album, including 7 bossa jazz originals for a nine-piece ensemble, will be released in 2013 by Schema Records and by Zounds Inc in Japan.

Jukka Eskola has studied at Sibelius Academy Jazz Department and has worked as a professional musician for 15 years, performing with wide range of bands, artists and music styles. Besides his own quintet and the aforementioned Five Corners Quintet, Jukka has been a regular in such hard-hitting ensembles as the Ricky-Tick Big Band, the Jimi Tenor Band, Jo Stance, and Nuspirit Helsinki. He was also the featured soloist with the Jussi Lampela Nonet in the 2010 release “Lampela X Eskola”.

In 2006, Jukka Eskola received the Sony Jazz Price, and he was chosen as the “Artist of the Year” by the Pori Jazz festival in 2007. In addition to his work as a jazz musician, he has featured on nearly 200 albums as a session musician. He has performed with many internationally well known jazz artists, such as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Maria Schneider, Jimmy Smith, The New York Voices, Adam Nussbaum, David Liebman, Tony Allen, Patti Austin, Peter Erskine etc. Eskola also currently works as the artistic director for Elojazz Festival in Oulu, Finland.
